WebCombo.NET#
This control is pretty awsome. It basically allows you to have intellisense or autocomplete type lookups from your applications and datagrids.

Pretty cool, but $500/developer is kinda stiff.

Back Online#
Well.... it started with a buzzing CPU fan. I then tried to replace my entire motherboard, CPU, and memory. I got lots of STOP errors when trying to boot up after that as I realized that the newer mobo needed different IDE drivers.

I decided it wasn't worth it because I was going to be upgrading from a total POS to a not as crappy POS.

Some time in the future I'll just buy another dell server, move everything over, upgrade the mobo and use the computer as a test machine or backup server or something else... But I did migrate the server into the main floor of my house, so now its out of my room and hidden behind the entertainment center. The backup machine is going there next.

Adding Javascript From ASP.NET Controls#
I was having some trouble trying to manually add a giant block of Javascript from an ASP.NET Web Control.

Without testing it yet, I believe that this solves the problem by using IsClientBlockRegistered.

.NET Code Generation From XSLT#
This article talks about generating .NET code, mainly the strongly typed dataset, from XSLT. I was skimming it because I didn't really need the primer on XSLT, but I never saw where he got his XML file from to transform. I didn't see anything about automating this either... I don't really use the DataSet very much. I use the DataReader and DataTable more. I don't understand why you can drag a table onto a designer to get its schema, but you can't do the same for stored procedures that return data. Oh well.

Some guys have created a real world force field. It uses plasma (highly charged particles), held in place by a magnetic field, to seal off a vaccum. That means that the field has to resist at least 14.6956 pounds per square inch. Check it out here.

Bad Coffee#
For a while I have been giving Kathleen crap (in a joking way of course) about making bad coffee. Well I have been working from home the last 2 days, and I havn't been pleased with the coffee that I have been making either.

I have been using a variety of 3 different kinds of coffee, 1 of which I used to use all the time in college, and always liked it. So I don't think its the coffee grinds.

I don't think that it could be the coffee machine. We have a pretty good one, and I don't think that the machine could actually alter the taste of the coffee.

So that means it's either the water, the water/coffee grinds ratio, or the cream. Have to experiment more...

VB.NET vs Nearly Every Other OOP Language#
Why does VB need to change stuff around?

If everyone on earth calls an abstract class an "abstract class", and they all use the keyword "abstract", why does VB change this to "MustInherit" ?

ASP.NET and VSS#
God damn it. I just typed forever on this damn post, but I had timed out and lost everything I had typed. I'm so pissed I could fill this with 4 letter words, but .... forget it.

I'll sum this up as fast as I can, my last post (that was lost) was very detailed, this one won't be.

To move a project from a local computer to a server and put it under VSS control:
  1. Copy the entire solution to a folder structure on the server
  2. Create a new virtual website on the server and point it to the folder with the web project (should be below the solution file in the folder structure)
  3. If the solution file doesn't work (probably won't) create a new blank solution file in a folder above your web root
  4. Add your web projects to this solution. When it asks where to add them from, you should probably try http://develoment.MyDomain.com (if your new virtual webserver is using that domain... otherwise you can create a fake domain name in your hosts file and use that. The important thing is that whatever you type in there has to resolve to the folder where your web app project file is located. I once had a bunch of trouble and did something weird where I shared the website root as a network share and then entered \\ServerName\ShareName for this parameter and it worked... dunno.
  5. Go to file->Source Control->Add Solution To Source Control
  6. On the client machiens to go File->Source Control->Open Project From Source Control
  7. Select the VSS project (folder) where your .sln file is located
  8. When it asks for the working copy address, you have to supply it with http://SomethingHere that will resolve to the folder that will hold the website's root. Note: VSS hasn't created this folder yet!!!
  9. Because the client machines can probably only run 1 website, change the default website to point to the folder that is going to be populated with the website in VSS (remember you will have to manually create the folder that you are going to be point too. Use the same naming/structure as you have setup in VSS and on the server.)
  10. If you want, you can create a fake name in your hosts file for this as well, and then use http://ThisVSSProcessSucks if you mapped that name to 127.0.0.1.

Thats it!!!!

Now I have to figure out how I can setup this page so that the forms authentication won't cause me to lose my post again....

"Far From Good"#
As payment for "making" Kathleen "see" (sleep through would be more accurate) the new Matrix movie, I told her I would let her pick out a movie at Blockbuster that she wanted to see.

Her selection was Far From Heaven. As this movie received an 88/100 at MetaCritic I figured it would be ok. Also, Ebert gave it a 100 (4 stars), and I have come to find that my taste in movies usually is very closly related to Eberts. What I mean is, if most critics hate a movie, but he really likes it, I usually end up liking it too, and vice versa.

So much for that. This is going to be the worst movie I will see this year, I am sure. It was SOOOO boring, I was trying to escape during the movie as Kathleen would dose off, but she kept waking up to catch me. I guess from an artistic point of view, or if viewed as a piece on the culture of racism and homophobia, it was really good, with it's weird camera angles, and it's black/gay hating characters. But in terms of watching the movie, it couldn't have been worse. I didn't care about any of the characters at all, and I thought the acting by Moore, who was nominated for Best Actress I believe, was terrible. Her character was so fake. How hard is it to act fake? Whatever.

Maybe "real" movie critics would say I'm an idiot, but if you want to see a movie that will make you wish you hadn't, this is the one.

Send To Notepad...#
Here is another little trick that I have been making good use of...

  1. Go to %SystemDrive%\documents and settings\%username%\sendto
  2. Right-click in the right hand panel and select New > Shortcut
  3. Create a new shortcut to Notepad.exe in the sendto folder.
Now you can send any file to notepad for easy viewing without any time waiting for a program (like VS.NET) to launch.

Works great for XML, HTML, script, and other text files that have a different extension.
